Mendy Lerato Lusaba,
Human Resource Practitioner, Zimbabwe
Mendy Lerato Lusaba is a Human Resource Practitioner by training and experience. She graduated from Midlands State University with Honours in Human Resources. After that she took up the Postgraduate in Labour Law from the University of Zimbabwe.
Her greatest strength lies in her deep desire to influence communities with positive social development. She believes in Social Entrepreneurship as the solution to problems faced by the world today.
Mendy is a strong willed self-assertive woman who does not take “NO" or "Can’t” for an answer. She lets no opportunity pass her by and has grabbed many Youth leadership opportunities that came her way.
This includes chairing the Gweru Junior Chamber International, adjudicating at the Inaugural Zimbabwe National University Debate Championships and participating at the UN Model and UN, supporting Youth Popular Participation in Leadership.
She also holds a number of awards to her name including the Global Entrepreneurship Week Award for Most Promising Female Entrepreneur and the Social Entrepreurship Bootcamp, US Embassy program, 2016 Award for Most Promising Social Entrepreneur. She also partook in entrepreneurship training with Empretec Zimbabwe , Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce Mentorship Class, ACT and is an alumni of the YALI RLCSA, USAID program, 2016 held in Pretoria South Africa.
Mendy runs her own start-up Chris and Geo Executive Domestic Placements which aims at empowering underprivileged women by getting them employment as Domestic Helpers. Chris and Geo was founded in 2012 through personal experience. After giving birth to her first child, she got a referred maid from her in-laws and relatives as it is the norm and culture. The experience was not a good one as she had to change maids about four times in a space of six months. Each time she struggled to get a maid on time, who was well trained and adjusted to change.
From this she realized, there was a gap in the market. With her background in Human Resources Management she decided to establish her own agency. The organization was in its research phase but got properly registered in 2013.
After losing her job in 2014, she decided to concentrate on the business full-time. The concept is relatively new in her country and is hampered by cultural practices. However, with the support of friends, family and colleagues, the organization has managed to establish a market.
The organization also works closely with expatriates who need local maids. She also trains women through churches or gatherings, on domestic worker employment. Her aim is to professionalize this sector and give it the recognition it deserves. She also encourages and empowers the domestic workers themselves through trainings. Domestic work is very important and hence should be treated likewise.
The organization's vision is to run a fully-fledged housekeeping training center where enrolment is not based on academic aptitude but on ability and personality.
Her advice to fellow startups is that once started never go back, just rest, pivot, slow down or change direction but never ever turn back.
